NML FOUNDATION DAY AWARDS

The Nijhawan Award for Best Technical Paper

–      The Nijhawan Award for the best research paper, 2006 was awarded to the team constituted of Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Sri S. Badjena and Prof. S.P. Mehrotra, won the for the paper was entitled as “Hydration of mechanically activated granulated blast furnace slag” published in the Journal Met. Trans. B, Vol. 36B, December, pp. 873-883.

Abstract : Ground granulated blast furnace is known to possess latent hydraulic activity, i.e. it shows cementations properties in contact with water over a long period of time. Results are presented in this paper to show that, in sharp contrast to published literature on the hydration of neat ground granulated blast furnace slag, the complete hydration of slag is possible in short time (days) even without a chemical activator. This is achieved if the slag used for hydration is mechanically activated using an attrition mill. The nature of hydration product of the mechanically activated slag depends not only on initial specific surface area (SSA) of the slag but also on surface activation as manifested by change in Zeta potential (x) of the slag during the milling process. Depending upon SSA and x, the hydration product changed from non-reacted slag with high porosity (slag SSA < 0.3 m2/g, x > -29 mV) to hydrated slag with compact structure (SSA = 0.3-0.4 m2/g, x = -29 to -31 mV), and finally, to fully hydrated slag with high porosity (SSA > 4 m2/g, x ~ 26 mV). Unlike the poorly crystalline hydration product formed by the non-activated slag even after prolonged hydration for years, the hydration product of mechanically activated slag was crystalline in nature. The crystallinity of the product improved with increasing duration of mechanical activation. The calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) phases present in the slag hydration product, characterized by Ca/Si ratio 0.7-1.5, were similar to those found for hydraulic cement binder except for the presence of Mg and Al as impurities. In addition, the presence of a di-calcium-silicate-hydrate phase (a-C2SH), that normally forms under hydrothermal condition, and a Ca-deficient and Si-Al- rich phase (average Ca/Si mole ratio < 0.1 and Si/Al ~ 3) is indicated, especially in the hydration product of slag that was activated for longer time.

The Altekar Award for the Best Technology

–      The Altekar award for best technology wasawarded to the team consists of Dr. S. Prabhakar, Dr. G. Bhaskar Raju, Dr. S. Subba Rao, Dr. D.S. Rao and Shri T.V. Vijayakumar, Scientists of the Madras Centre for the best technology “Column flotation for the beneficiation of sillimanite” developed for M/s Indian Rare Earths Ltd., Chatrapur, Orissa.

Abstract : For the first time, NML Madras Centre has designed, installed and commissioned a commercial scale flotation column having a capacity of 6 tons/hr for the beneficiation of sillimanite at Indian Rare Earth Ltd., OSCOM, Chatrapur, Orissa. The design drawings and specifications are provided to IREL. Fabrication, erection, installation and commissioning of the flotation column are completed as per the schedule. The plant personnel are trained for operation. The flotation column was commissioned successfully and integrated with the existing beneficiation circuit. The column operation is stabilized and is currently producing sillimanite grades of above 93% and with recoveries of above 85%. The column operation manual was handed over to the plant personnel at IREL.
